Sports drugs abuse awareness at the mela
Abuse of Anabolic Steroid can cause liver tumors, cancer, fluid retention, high blood pressure, increase in bad cholesterol and decrease in good cholesterol, acne and kidney tumors. In men they can cause shrinking of testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts and increased risk of prostate cancer. In women, they can cause growth of facial hair, male pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris and deepened voice. In adolescents, they can cause growth retardation, premature skeletal maturation, and accelerate puberty changes. The misuse can also cause mood swings, maniac-like symptoms, depression, paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions and impaired judgment.”
The ongoing MTNL Perfect Health Mela is creating awareness about the misuse of anabolic steroids which are androgenic. Enough awareness needs to be created both amongst the public as well as medical professionals not to give such drugs, especially to the people who are aspiring to national sports. Anabolic Androgenic Steroids are man-made substances related to male sex hormones.
The word ‘Anabolic” refers to muscle-building and “androgenic” refers to increased masculine characteristics. “Steroid” refers to the class of drugs. These drugs are available only on the prescription by a medical doctor. Medically, they are used in certain medical disorders including treating body wasting in patients with AIDS disease and can lead to serious health problems, many of which may be irreversible.
Today, athletes abuse anabolic steroids to enhance performance and also to improve their physical appearance. The drugs can be taken orally or injected typically in cycles of weeks and months (cycling) rather than continuously.
Cycling involves having multiple doses over a specific period of time, stopping for a period and starting again. In addition, people combine several different types of steroids to maximize their effectiveness (referred to as stacking), Dr. Aggarwal pointed out.
