Mega health check camp organized
Sunday 7thJune 2009 HCFI: New Delhi: Even people who have genes that predispose them to certain types of cancer or heart disease might be able to reduce their risk by living a healthy lifestyle, said Dr KK Aggarwal President, Heart Care Foundation of India and Director, IMA AKN Sinha Institute, while speaking at the free heart check up camp organized at Acharya Sushi Muni Ashram in the city here today.
The camp was organized by Heart Care Foundation of India in association with World Fellowship for Religion and IMA New Delhi Branch to ear mark the birth day of Acharya Sadhvi Dr Sadhna Ji Maharaj.
Dr Aggarwal said that between 27 and 49 percent of people think preventing cancer is impossible or highly unlikely. Following three steps people could take to dramatically affect the chances of developing cancer or heart disease: Eat a mostly plant-based diet; maintain a healthy weight; and Exercise regularly.
Talking about the cancer reduction Dr Aggarwal said that the data is pretty clear that we can make a significant drop in the cancer rate with these three changes. We can prevent about one-third of cancers with these changes. And if you add tobacco prevention, which reduces about 30 percent of cancers, over half of today's cancers could be prevented. Increased weight increases the risk of cancer, and physical activity, regardless of weight, decreases breast cancer risk.
For patients at moderate to high heart disease risk three pharmacologic interventions have been shown to effectively reduce the risk: antihypertensive drugs for patients who are not at blood pressure goal, statin therapy, and low dose aspirin.
Inaugurating the camp Dr Sadhi Sadhna said that adding meditation to the routine can help reducing the dose of medicines.
Chief Guest for the camp Delhi Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain, said that a small number of modifiable factors underlies a large number of deaths and disabilities and should be modified by all susceptible people. Because cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death clinicians should consider counseling for prevention of heart attack and stroke in all patients ages 35 and older.
The camp was attended by over 500 patients who received free ECG, lipid profile and counseling services. Over 50 doctors from all pathies gave their services.
Sardar Buta Singh, Former Home Minister presiding over the function said that for all patients, lifestyle education should be provided to promote maintenance of healthy weight and physical activity.
Sh J P Aggarwal member of parliament, special guest at the camp said that every one should have a yearly check up done and the same can be linked up to one’s birthday.
Sh. Shyam Lal Garg, MLA said that the best gift one can give to any one is a health check. Electro Meridian Sensor.
