Health Tip: Bloated and Gassy?
Monday 17th August 2009 HCFI New Delhi: Cut down on foods that worsen symptoms of gas in the abdomen said Dr KK Aggarwal President, Heart Care Foundation of India, BSNL Dil Ka Darbar and MTNL Perfect Health Mela.
The need to burp and pass gas is normal. But some people feel like they're frequently bloated and gassy.
General principles:
Food that split equally into two produces gas e.g. pulses, rajma, chole etc.
Cook then after soaking them in ware for 8-12 hours or cook them with heeng.
Food grown over the surface if eaten raw produces gas like feeling, cauliflower, brocolli, cabbage etc.
Food grown under the ground produces gas if eaten raw or without soaking it in the water e.g onion, radish, carrot etc.
Heart Care Foundation of India offers these suggestions to help reduce uncomfortable gas:
1. Cut down on foods known to cause gas, such as beans, dairy products, bran and whole wheat foods.
2. Limit gas-causing vegetables such as onions, broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts, and fruits such as peaches, apples and pears.
3. Avoid sugary fruit drinks and carbonated soft drinks. Instead, drink water.
4. Avoid swallowing excessive air by eating slowly and chewing thoroughly.
5. Keep a diary of foods that cause gas for you, and try to avoid them.
